SWAT called to home, Snellville man dies after standoff with police

The Gwinnett County Police's SWAT team was called to a home on Skylar's Mill Way in Snellville about 2 pm on Wednesday, June 3rd, after reports that the man had barricaded himself and his 14-year-old son inside the home.

The man has been identified as Selwyn Heath, age 40. Police told WSB-TV that the police were alerted to the dangerous situation when a woman went to the police to report domestic violence by her fiancé. When police went to the home, the man refused to exit the house. The SWAT team was called. Police tossed tear gas into the back of the home in order to force the man to leave the house through the front door.

According to some news sources, after the man refused to obey police commands, a Taser was used on the man, and when that failed to deter him, they tried bean bags, but the man continued toward police with a butcher knife. After trying these methods failed, Heath was shot. Selwyn Heath later died during surgery at Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville.
