Suburbs ideal for drug traffickers

Atlanta burbs have amenities for drug traffickers
The Associated Press
"This county's awash in drugs," said Gwinnett County Assistant District Attorney Keith Miles. The placid nature of Gwinnett County and other nearby counties ...
..."In suburban Atlanta, Mexican drug trafficking organizations generally rent nondescript houses in middle-class neighborhoods in suburbs like Lilburn. They often have one house for storing and processing drugs, one house for storing and processing money and a third for conducting transactions, so when an arrest happens at one house, they don't lose everything, Porter said.

...."But Miles said he thinks the violence is already increasing and cited about a dozen unsolved homicides in Gwinnett County that he believes are drug related. He cited a case in which two men apparently shot each other to death in a house where a money counter was found. As busts net increasingly large amounts of drugs and cash, he said, law enforcement officers are also finding more and bigger guns.

"You don't have shootouts in the street, but who's to say that's not coming? I think it is," Miles said. "I see it getting worse before it gets better."

Getting information on crimes

It's understandable that police departments would want to keep a lot of details under wraps. Sure, I'd like to have it all to post here, but I'd rather let the police do their jobs than distract them by expecting them to give me every detail. I also wouldn't want the police to compromise investigations and convictions.

Not really visiting a friend

Several businesses in Snellville have been burglarized lately. Police believed that the burglaries were being done by the same person, due to similarities in burglaries in surrounding areas.

Snellville Police received a tip that the criminal might be heading toward Snellville and that the perpetrator might have a black pick-up truck, based on information from burglaries earlier the same day in Loganville.

A Snellville Police officer noticed a black pick-up truck leaving a shopping center off of US78 near N Crestview. A tanning shop and a golf store had been burglarized. The officer followed the vehicle, which turned into the driveway of a residence on North Crestview Road.

The suspect pretended that he was going there to visit a friend, but then admitted he was lying after the officer noted the presence of bits of safety glass on the suspect and his pick up truck. (D'oh!) The suspect was arrested.

Almost deadly domestic dispute

In late March, 2009, Snellville police had a report of a person who threatening to commit suicide. It's not clear whether it was the husband or the wife who was threatening suicide in this domestic dispute.

The police arrived at the residence, finding the wife outside the house. The police helped the woman, but the man was still inside the house and wanted the police officers to go to the back door of the residence for some reason.

The police went toward the back yard, and the man set his dogs on the officers. The officers could see that the man had a shotgun near his back door. The police went back to the front of the residence.

The police ordered the man to show them his hands. He raised his arms up and officers could see the man had a semi-automatic pistol tucked in his pants. The man was clearly intending to kill the officers. The man was arrested.

Loose lips bring down young outlaws

Two 19 year olds and Two 15 year olds have been charged with burglary and firearm violations after Snellville police received a report about 3 suspicious people shooting in a field behind a residential area.

Police located 3 suspects on Abilene Trail. The police found a resident who said that one of the suspects had been overheard bragging that the trio had broken into a house near there that day.

Some of the stolen items were found in the home of one of the guys. Perhaps it was a panic attack, but one of the guys claimed to be having a heart attack. Medical personnel came to check him out, and since he was found to not be having a true heart attack, he was taken into police custody.
